As early as 1953, Fitts and Seeger showed that human error and response speed can be predicted partly by the spatial compatibility between visual displays and spatial responses (Stimulus-Response-Compatibility, SR C). Spatial compatibility in this context refers t o the similarity in spatial structur e between visual displa ys or the behavior of spatial objects on the one hand, and the spatial structure of control interfaces on the other.
